Students will use the Internet to create a national parks treasure map. Others will follow the map and clues to find specific parks.

Unit: National Parks Treasure Hunt
Guiding Question: What special characteristics do our national parks have?
Critical Content: Become familiar with various national parks in our country.
Grades: 3-6

Duration: 1 hour

Group size: small groups of 3-4 students

Setting: Classroom with Internet access

Materials: Computer with Internet access for each group of students, one copy of the Treasure Map Directions, a blank Treasure Map, and a list of state abbreviations for each group of students.

Procedures:

  • Break class up into small groups.

  • Each group will need a computer with Internet connections, a printed copy of the Treasure Map Directions, and a blank Treasure Map of the United States, and a list of state abbreviations.

  • Students will read the Student Direction Sheet and follow the directions. They will find the information about national parks needed to create a national parks treasure map. Have students fill out their group worksheet using information from the National Park Service website.

  • Each group will be responsible for completing steps 1-4 on the correlating activity sheet. Groups should not let the other groups see their work.

  • After groups have filled out their worksheet and completed their treasure maps, have the groups exchange maps and clues with each other. They will then try to use the clues and the treasure maps to identify the various national parks.
