Activity 3:
National Park Scavenger Hunt

Students will use the NPS website to find an assortment of national parks and monuments.

Unit: National Parks Treasure Hunt
Guiding Question: What types of places are our national parks and monuments?
Critical Content: Students will understand the variety of places that are valued by citizens and protected by the National Park system.

Grades: 3-6

Duration: 1 hour session (may be shorter by limiting number of items in the scavenger hunt or dividing the questions up among various groups)

Group size: Whole class; students may want to work in pairs
Setting: Classroom
Materials:
Computer with Internet access for every 2-3 students. Scavenger Hunt Activity Sheet for each student.

Procedures:

  • Students will use the National Park Service - Search by Interests web site to find items for the scavenger hunt.

  • Have students share their answers in small groups or with the whole class. How many different parks can fit under one description? (How many parks are there that feature a geologic feature?)

  • The final question will ask students to identify a park about which they would like to learn more. This will lead into Activity 4: Our National Treasures in which students do more in-depth research on a specific park of their choice.
