Denali's Back Country Plan

Click on the picture of a wolf to see and hear a quotation from Aldo Leopold.

Now that you have a background in the overarching legal issues of protecting and managing wilderness - in general and in Denali National Park's designated and eligilble/suitable wilderness - the final step of this quest is to evaluate 5 alternatives for managing the back country of Denali National Park and Preserve. Click the pen and paper to download a pdf worksheet summary of the most important details of the plan.

The 5 alternative plans run the gamut from "no action" to a great deal of action on the part of the park service. Click the Clipboard to go to the table of contents of the Final Backcountry Management Plan comparing the 5 plans and their impact on the park. Click Chapter 2 - Alternatives and scroll down to page 63 where you will find the Summary Table of Alternatives. This table ends on page 75. The Summary Table of Environmental Consequences begins on page 76 and ends on page 80. Divide these tables among your group to read.

Discuss the 5 plans in your group. Then, click the Earth to complete a survey to help you evaluate each alternative's "fit" to the laws as you understand them. On completion, compose a brief written evaluation of each plan, indicating the plan your group believes is most appropriate.
