Natives of the Gates of the Arctic

1. Who are the Native peoples of Gates of the Arctic?

People have lived in and around the Brooks Range and the Noatak, Kobuk and Koyukuk Rivers for over 12,000 years. And, people live here still.

Read about the Pre-history of the area:

Over the last decade, the Project Jukebox interviewed many Alaska Natives living in and around Gates of the Arctic. Justus Mekiana, interviewed in 1993 in Anaktuvuk Pass, recalls the names of Native peoples.

Click on the map to listen to hear how the Native names are pronounced.

Gates of the Arctic Jukebox Project was funded by the Gates of the Arctic National Park in partnership with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Oral History Program.
