Cultural Glossary

biological diversity: variety of species living in one ecosystem
biosphere: the part of Earth that is capable of supporting life
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC): President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal relief project to employ young men to work on conservation projects throughout the U.S.
consumer: organism that eats other organisms or organic matter in a food chain
: a people's ideas, skills, customs, arts, etc., that are passed down through generations
decomposer: an organism that eats other organisms or organic matter, breaking it down to obtain energy
ecology: relationships and interactions between organisms and with their environments
ecosystem: group of organisms that interact with one another, together with their nonliving environment
food chain: food and energy links between the different plants and animals in an ecosystem
food web: relationship formed by interconnecting food chains
inorganic: composed of material that is not nor ever was living
organic: composed of material that is or was living
photosynthesis: process by which organisms use energy from sunlight to make their own food
portage: to transport overland between bodies of water
predatory: a predatory animal lives by killing and eating other animals
producer: organism that is able to make its own food
resources: a country's natural riches, such as land, water, forests, and mineral deposits
temperate rain forest: characterized by moderate temperatures and abundant precipitation; exists only in New Zealand, Patagonia and western North America; typically home to trees that can grow hundreds of feet tall and live for 1000+ years.
