This 2-story log
structure of Russian vernacular design served as the headquarters of the
Russian Orthodox diocese of Sitka and residence of the Bishop (1843-72,
1903-69), as well as office, mission school, and personal chapel of the
first bishop of Alaska. It is among the best surviving examples of a 19th-century
Russian residence in the United States.
During the summer of 2004, the north and west exterior elevations were
scraped and repainted. Additional work included the replacement of deteriorated
window sash and trim. Plans are being made to install a new fire suppression
system in the chapel and to install new a new fire detection system throughout
the building. Routine cyclic maintenance continues on an annual basis.
