Unalaska Island, Alaska

National Register Number: 70000112
Resource Type: Building
Property Type: Religious facility
Designated: April 15, 1970

Completed in 1826, this structure was built by the Russian American Fur Company under the terms of its second charter, which required it to support Russian Orthodox missionaries and establish schools in Russian America. The site is associated with Father Veniaminov, who had the church built and established a Russian school which operated from 1825 until the early 1960s. Father Veniaminov also translated the Aleut language to Church Slavonic and recorded Aleut customs and material culture, in addition to providing health services to the Aleuts.
