Completed
in 1826, this structure was built by the Russian American Fur Company under
the terms of its second charter, which required it to support Russian Orthodox
missionaries and establish schools in Russian America. The site is associated
with Father Veniaminov, who had the church built and established a Russian
school which operated from 1825 until the early 1960s. Father Veniaminov
also translated the Aleut language to Church Slavonic and recorded Aleut
customs and material culture, in addition to providing health services to
the Aleuts.
