To prepare for the spring plowing effort, road crew foremen fly over the road to look for troublesome spots. Areas of ice can accumulate at certain areas and significantly slow the plowing process, as heavy equipment must rip and push it aside. Some icy areas can be over ten feet thick. This shot is of Mile 40 on the Denali Park Road.
