Aufeis accumulates during winter along stream and river valleys in arctic and subarctic environments. It forms by the upwelling of river water behind ice dams, or by ground-water discharge. Aufeis on the Denali Park Road is one of the biggest obstacles in the spring to opening it for public traffic.
