Fort Moultrie's Sally Port, or main entrance, is where visitors begin their exploration of our timeline. Fort Moultrie represents the entire history of static seacost defense in the United States. This fort, the third named Moultrie, shows visitors how fortifications and artillery changed from 1809-1947. Exhibits take the story back to 1776 and the Revolutionary War.

The Fort Moultrie timeline goes back to 1809, when this third fort was constructed. Visible is the oldest standing structure remaining inside the fort, the 1809 powder magazine.

Fort Moultrie, World War II

The newest part of Fort Moultrie, the Harbor Entrance Control Post commanded the entrance to Charleston Harbor during World War II. Constructed in 1944, all ships entering the area had to contact the HECP before entering the harbor.

Harbor Entrance Control Post

Fort Moultrie's Harbor Entrance Control Post was constructed in 1944. This facility coordinated harbor defenses and controlled ships' entering and leaving the harbor during World War II.
