Palmer Chapel was the only church in Big Cataloochee. Revivals held here each fall rekindled the spirits of the faithful and brought in new members to the church.
When a member of the community died, the bell in the church would be rung for several minutes to attract attention. Then after a brief pause, the bell would toll the age of the deceased.
