The African Burial Ground National Monument is one of 10 National Parks comprising 23 unique destinations that can be found in and around New York Harbor. These Parks are in northern New Jersey, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Westchester County, New York. The National Parks of New York Harbor welcomes millions of visitors each year.

Lost to history due to landfill and development, the African Burial Ground was rediscovered in 1991 during the construction of a Federal office building. Approximately 15,000 free and enslaved Africans were buried in the five or six acre burial ground that dates from the 17th century. More...
