Kwanzaa 2007 Events

The African Burial Ground National Monument is celebrating Kuumba (Creativity) and Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) for Kwanzaa this year and would like you to join us! Explore your creativity and learn about the history of the African Burial Ground. For reservations and more information call 212-637-2019. Make reservations by December 21, 2007.

DECEMBER 22, 2007	OPEN HOUSE & PRE- KWANZAA CELEBRATION
Adinkra Appliques Workshop - The participants will create banners by cutting out Adinkra symbols and sewing them onto cloth; exploring the cultures of 17th and 18th century enslaved Africans in New York City. 10:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. (25 participants for each workshop.)
Beading and Stories: African Heritage & Kwanzaa Workshop - Through beading and storytelling, participants will learn about the contributions made by Africans all over the world 10:00 a.m. & 1:00p.m. (20 participants for each workshop)
Head and Body Wrapping Workshop - Participants will use African cloths and learn how to design wraps for the head and body. 10:00 a.m. (20 participants)
Kwanzaa Sing-a-long - Join a performer as she leads participants in the singing of Kwanzaa songs. 11:00 a.m. and throughout the day.
Excerpts - The Procession - Participants will learn about the significant events in the lives of African people buried in the African Burial Ground through spoken word. 2:00 p.m. (50 participants)
DECEMBER 27, 2007	KWANZAA PROGRAM
Beading and Stories: African Heritage & Kwanzaa Workshop - Through beading and storytelling, participants will learn about the contributions made by Africans all over the world. 10:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. (20 participants for each workshop)
African Puppets Workshop - After a tour of the African Burial Ground memorial, increase your knowledge of African culture by viewing fashions from the past and present. 10:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. (25 participants for each workshop)
Head and Body Wrapping Workshop - Participants will use African cloths and learn how to design wraps for the head and body. 10:00 a.m. & 3:00 p.m. (20 participants)
Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble - Visualize and particpate in the greatness of African culture and art through an outdoor drumming ceremony (Noon) and an indoor presentation (1:30 p.m.) of "The Beauty of African Culture and Family (The Future)."
