Memorial and Museum neighborhood:

The African American Civil War Memorial and the Freedom Foundation Museum, across the street from the memorial, are located in the historic Shaw community of Northwest Washington DC. The Shaw neighborhood is named after Union Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, commander of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. During the Civil War, many freed slaves called contrabands sought refuge in an Army encampment in this area, called Freedman village.
