The purpose of the Teacher-Ranger-Teacher (TRT) position is two-fold. First, it will supplement the park’s Interpretation Division by performing duties related to resource education and interpretation, plus visitor services and safety. Secondly, it will allow the teacher to more fully explore a national park to enrich his/her understanding and appreciation of our natural and cultural heritage, and in turn provide students and educators with activities developed for use in the classroom.
Major Park Duties
- Prepares and presents formal and informal public programs such as orientation talks, conducted walks, Junior Ranger programs, demonstrations, roving interpretation, and campfire programs. Programs are based on park resources and developed themes, and the standards for NPS interpretation. Staffs visitor center as needed, informing visitors about park facilities and resources.
- Conducts independent research on varied topics for the purpose of providing resource education programs and visitor services. Learns about park resources by attending in-park training, reading park materials, observing ranger programs, assisting researchers, and interviewing professionals in the field.
- Develops curriculum-based learning activities relevant to both park resources and student needs of the participating school district.
- May assist on various scientific and cultural research, resource management, planning, or volunteer projects taking place in the park depending upon work schedule, teaching interests, and training requirements. Such projects involve working closely with park staff, researchers, and partners.
- Participates in the evaluation of the TRT program.
Classroom TRT Duties
- Incorporates activities related to the National Park Service into their classroom curriculum during the school year.
- Wears the NPS uniform during National Park Week (in late April) and conducts activities/presentations relating the national parks to their own classes, as well as other classes, teachers, and schools.
- Participates in the ongoing evaluation of their park-related curriculum activities and the TRT program.
