American Graves Protection and
Secretary Jewell Has Appointed Three to the NAGPRA Review Committee
On November 9, 2015, the Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell appointed Heather Hecht Edgar, LindaLee (Cissy) Farm, and Patrick D. Lyons to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Review Committee.
Dr. Edgar is Curator of Human Osteology, Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, University of New Mexico, and was nominated by the American Alliance of Museums, the American Anthropological Association, the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, the Archaeological Institute of America, and the Society for American Archaeology.
Ms. Farm is a partner at Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel, LLP, a Hawaii-based law firm, and was nominated for a second term by the Natural Science Collections Alliance. Ms. Farm previously served on the NAGPRA Review Committee from 2011 to 2015 and chaired the committee from 2013 to 2015.
Dr. Lyons is Director of the Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona, and was nominated by the American Anthropological Association, the Archaeological Institute of America, and the Society for American Archaeology.
We express our appreciation to all who were nominators, or nominees, for their interest in NAGPRA and the NAGPRA Review Committee.
We welcome the newest members to the Review Committee as we express our deep appreciation to Sonya Atalay and Alexander Barker, whose terms expired in April 2015. On behalf of all Department of the Interior staff whose work supports the National NAGPRA Program and the Review Committee, we commend Ms. Atalay and Mr. Barker for the benefit they brought to all NAGPRA constituents through the considerable time, thought, and effort they devoted to the NAGPRA process.

Solicitation of NAGPRA Review Committee Nominations Due August 31, 2015
The notice soliciting nominations for one member of the NAGPRA Review Committee was published in the Federal Register on July 1, 2015. The Secretary of the Interior will appoint the member from nominations submitted by Indian tribes, Native Hawaiian organizations, and traditional Native American religious leaders. The nominee need not be a traditional Indian religious leader. The deadline for receipt of nominations is August 31, 2015. Read more...
Upcoming NAGPRA Review Committee Meetings
November 18-19, 2015: The NAGPRA Review Committee Meeting is scheduled for November 18-19, 2015, at the Riverwind Hotel and Casino, 1554 State Highway 9, Norman, OK, 73072. The meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. each day. The agenda and meeting materials will be posted on or before October 28. Click here to read the Federal Register notice.

December 14, 2015: The Review Committee will also meet via teleconference on December 14, 2015, from 2:00 p.m. until approximately 4:00 p.m. EST, for the sole purpose of finalizing the Review Committee Report to Congress, should the report not be finalized by November 19.
