LOCATION:
Shenandoah National Park is located approximately 75 miles west of Washington, DC. The Eastern Interagency Coordination Center is located in the Park's Headquarters Unit four miles east of Luray, Virginia on US Highway 211. The Coordination Center is generally not available for public visitation.
PURPOSE:
The Eastern Interagency Coordination Center provides critical nationwide support in locating, mobilizing, and tracking personnel, equipment, supplies, and aircraft during emergency and non-emergency operations. The Coordination Center works in cooperation with a large number of federal, state, and local agencies to provide resources necessary for combating forest fires, responding to natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes, and special events where specialized personnel, supplies, and equipment are needed.
DESCRIPTION:
The Eastern Interagency Coordination Center is located in the Communications Center at Shenandoah National Park. The Park encompases over 196,000 acres of pristine forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, including over 79,000 acres of Congressionally Designated Wilderness. Recreational opportunities at Shenandoah include hiking, fishing, photography, and wildlife observation.
