At 7,500 feet (2,286 meters) above sea level on the West Slope of the Rocky Mountains and the Colorado Plateau, Curecanti includes steep canyons, sagebrush hillsides, riparian areas, and forests of pine, spruce, fir, cottonwood, and aspen. It is mostly high desert with sedimentary and volcanic rock formations.
Summer highs usually are in the 70° to 80° range, and lows 40° to 50°. The wind often picks up at 12 pm. Beware if you are out in the middle of Blue Mesa at this time! Thunderstorms are common on summer afternoons.
Winter highs usually reach 20° to 30° and lows often dip below zero. Snow levels reach one foot in the lowlands and double that in higher elevations.
Layered clothing is recommended in any season.
