Visibility

The webcams overlook the lake, Steel Information Center and Annie Spring Entrance Station. They offer a snapshot of current conditions in those locations. Note that these webcams sometimes do not transmit an updated image due to power outages. Air quality and the forecast are also helpful in determining visibility.

Weather conditions, especially wind, precipitation, and temperature can vary between locations around the rim, and at different elevations. It can also change rapidly. Climate

Winters at Crater Lake are long and snowy. Storms from the Pacific Ocean dump an annual average of 41 ft (12.5 m) of snow at park headquarters. The park's tremendous snowfall is a result of its position at the crest of the Cascade Mountains. Summers at Crater Lake are short but sunny. July, August, and September are your best bets for warm, dry weather. In May, June, and October, sunny days alternate with periods of rain and snow.

 

Snowfall, Snow Depth & Historic Weather Observations

At the official park weather station rangers have been recording data since 1931. Observations are made each morning and uploaded to the National Weather Service. To see the current snow depth, and daily rain and snow totals for this month follow these steps.
  1. go to NOWData - NOAA Online Weather Data
  2. In the Location box, scroll and select Crater Lake Nps, Or
  3. For the Product - select Daily data for a month
  4. Change the date only if you want data from a different month or year
  5. Under View click GO
The yearly average snowfall at Crater Lake National Park has declined from an average of 51 ft (15.5 m) in the 1930’s to 41 ft (12.5 m) in 2021. The greatest cumulative snowfall for one season was 879 inches (73 feet, 22.25 m) the winter of 1932-33. The greatest depth on the ground at one time was 258 inches (21½ ft, 6.5 m) the winter of 1983.
