Virtual Camp: Day 3

A round image shows a light colored rock containing a dark brown compression of the ancient paleovespa wasp.
Learn about the different insect and leaf fossils found here!

Introduction to Fossils

Fossils are the preserved remains of ancient once-living creatures seen as either skeletons, impressions or compressions, and traces of their past behavior can all be recorded in rock.

Learn about the fossil history at Florissant Fossils Beds. See how fossils form, the different types of fossils, and how to make your own fossil!

Make Your Own Fossils

Many of the fossils found in the paper shales of the Florissant Formation formed through a process called carbonization. Students will get the chance to make compressions of plants in this activity and may use paint to mimic the carbonization process.

Inventory + Monitoring Evaluations

Students will get to view excavation sites that our paleontologists visit and do an easier version of what our paleontologists do here at the parks. They will virtually tour the excavation pit and 2 petrified stumps.

So You Wanna Be a Paleontologist?

Students will become familiarized with fossils that have been uncovered in Florissant Fossil Beds from the Eocene and Quaternary. They will select a certain extinct species and make a sketch on a Popsicle stick canvas. After shuffling their Popsicle stick fossil, they will then hide the sticks around a room and have someone else find and "excavate" the Popsicle stick fossil and attempt to put it back together. Best done with a partner to exchange fossils to find and put together.

Day 2

Cover geological concepts such as the stratigraphy of the Florissant Formation and learn about the geologic time scale.

Day 4

Visualize the past environment here by examining the types of rocks and fossils found in the Florissant area.
